4,422,065 live USPTO federal filings bearing word text — every filing year (the oldest live registrations date to the 1880s). At pull time the source itself reported 4,432,597 live word-text filings; the difference (10,532) is names that normalize to nothing (10,468 pure-symbol marks) plus register movement during the multi-hour pull.

Excluded — a name can be taken in ways this API cannot see

• dead/abandoned/cancelled/expired marks
• design-only marks (no word text)
• state trademark registers
• unregistered common-law usage

Each of these can block a name commercially while this API reports zero matches. That asymmetry is why every page of this site repeats: this is a fast first-pass screen over live federal word marks, not a legal clearance search.
